Dear gentle reader…sorry I took a little winter euro trip so had a week without keyboard access, but now we’re back!!
Thoughts from Amsterdam and London:
- Amsterdam is too european for me. Too many narrow cobbled roads, too little water at restaurants. But lovely to visit and somewhere I’d like to go back to in the spring, to see the tulips and eat the white asparagus.
- I love gouda. And pickled herring with red onions and an actual pickle.
- Still weak for british accents. When they speak, I listen to everything but hear nothing.
- London feels shockingly livable. So many amazing museums, all free, and so much casual history and art integrated into the environment. I’d love to spend a couple years there.
- The circle line feels like a novelty train line, which is great as a tourist but I can’t imagine that being my daily commute. Also, cloth seats? In this bedbug era??
- The rain in london somehow feels less offensive than in new york, and it feels weirdly less annoying to carry around an umbrella? An umbrella in nyc feels like a sign of weakness, but in london it’s assimilation.
- Somehow it’s become a trend for me to get violently ill whenever I set foot in europe. Last time it was covid in switzerland, this time it was stomach flu in amsterdam. Third time’s the charm??
p.s. the latest season of bridgerton is terrible lol
